With four days left to the start of IPL 2020 in the UAE, here’s a quick check on the eight franchises.

ipl 2020 all teams predicted 11

The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League gets underway on September 19 in the UAE, seven months since the original tournament was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ahead of the start of IPL 2020, here’s a quick look at the eight franchises.

IPL 2019 result: Champions

IPL 2020 squad:

mi ipl squad 2020

Withdrawn players: Lasith Malinga

Replacement: None

Mumbai Indians have had a good time in Abu Dhabi – the only other IPL team based there are Kolkata Knight Riders – and they don’t have injuries to speak of. Lasith Malinga’s loss for personal reasons deprives them of the IPL’s all-time leading wicket-taker, but in Trent Boult the franchise have a capable option to call on. The weak area for MI is the spin stocks, which leaves a lot on Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya.

Likely XI: 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Rohit Sharma (capt), 3 Suryakumar Yadav, 4 Ishan Kishan, 5 Keiron Pollard, 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Krunal Pandya, 8 Nathan Coulter-Nile, 9 Trent Boult, 10 Rahul Chahar, 11 Jasprit Bumrah

IPL 2019 result: Runners-up

IPL 2020 squad:

csk ipl 2020 squad

Withdrawn players: Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh

Replacements: None

Despite speculation about the exit of Raina and Harbhajan hurting their chances, CSK haven’t fretted that much given the balance of their squad. It will be interesting to see what the prolonged COVID-19 break has done to MS Dhoni, but given how he’s not one to stress, you can count on CSK producing the goods with him at the helm. After all, they have never missed the play-offs.

Likely XI: 1 Shane Watson, 2 Ambati Rayudu, 3 Faf du Plessis, 4 Kedar Jadhav, 5 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 6 DJ Bravo, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Shardul Thakur, 9 Piyush Chawla, 10 Deepak Chahar, 11 Imran Tahir

IPL 2019 result: Fifth place

IPL 2020 squad:

kkr squad 2020

Withdrawn players: Harry Gurney

Replacements: Ali Khan

Given the potential of their squad, there is hope of KKR punching their way to the play-offs. But so much is dependent on management calls, such as where Andre Russell bats, who opens with Sunil Narine, which overseas pace bowlers are picked. The skipper Dinesh Karthik needs to gel with head coach Brendon McCullum, too. As we saw in 2019, KKR fell away after a 4-1 start to lose six matches in a row. That kind of sloppiness may cost them dearly in the UAE.

Likely XI: 1 Sunil Narine, 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Nitish Rana, 4 Eoin Morgan, 5 Dinesh Karthik (capt/wk), 6 Andre Russell, 7 Rinku Singh, 8 Pat Cummins, 9 Sandeep Warrier, 10 Shivam Mavi/Kamlesh Nagarkoti, 11 Kuldeep Yadav

IPL 2019 result: Play-offs

IPL 2020 squad:

delhi capitals squad in ipl 2020

Withdrawn players: Chris Woakes, Jason Roy

Replacements: Daniel Sams

A cursory glance at Delhi Capitals’ squad shows you how the franchise puts an emphasis on youth. In Rishabh Pant, 22, and Prithvi Shaw, 20, the Capitals boast two of India’s finest young talents. Their skipper, Shreyas Iyer, turned 25 two weeks ago. Axar Patel, who last played for India in 2018, is 25. Even their overseas signings are young: Sandeep Lamichhane turned 20 last month, Keemo Paul is 21, Shimron Hetmyer is 22 and Kagiso Rabada is 24.

The addition of R Ashwin and Ajinkya Rahane, vastly experienced players, to go with Shikhar Dhawan, Amit Mishra and Ishant Sharma, puts Capitals as a very fine squad on paper.

Likely XI: 1 Prithvi Shaw, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Shimron Hetmyer, 4 Shreyas Iyer (capt), 5 Marcus Stoinis, 6 Rishabh Pant (wk), 7 Axar Patel, 8 Keemo Paul, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Kagiso Rabada, 11 Ishant Sharma

IPL 2019 result: Seventh place

IPL 2020 squad:

rajasthan royals squad 2020 ipl

Withdrawn players: None

Steve Smith is back as skipper of Rajasthan Royals, and with Jos Buttler and Jofra Archer around this is a strong team. There’s still no confirmation on Ben Stokes, who last month withdrew himself from England’s series versus Pakistan for to fly to New Zealand to be with his ailing father. If Stokes does not show up, Rajasthan Royals have David Miller to use in the middle order but they would be a bowler down.

Likely XI: 1 Jos Buttler (wk), 2 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 3 Sanju Samson, 4 Steve Smith (capt), 5 David Miller, 6 Riyan Parag, 7 Shreyas Gopal, 8 Jofra Archer, 9 Mayank Markande, 10 Jaydev Unadkat, 11 Ankit Rajpoot.

IPL 2019 result: Play-offs

IPL 2020 squad:

srh ipl squad 2020

Withdrawn players: None

With David Warner reinstated as captain, and with no casualties in terms of injured or withdrawn players, Sunrisers Hyderabad look a solid unit. If there is a problem, it is one of plenty. How do you fit in Warner, his prolific opening partner from IPL 2019, Jonny Bairstow, former captain Kane Williamson and the vital Afghanistan pair of Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi, into four overseas spots?

Likely XI: 1 David Warner (capt), 2 Jonny Bairstow, 3 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 4 Manish Pandey, 5 Vijay Shankar, 6 Mohammad Nabi, 7 Abhishek Sharma, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Khaleel Ahmed, 11 Sandeep Sharma

IPL 2019 result: Eighth place

IPL 2020 squad:

Withdrawn players: Kane Richardson

Replacements: Adam Zampa

With Aaron Finch, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers in the top four and a trio of solid allrounders in Moeen Ali, Chris Morris and Shivam Dube the lineup is sparkling. But there are holes that need to be plugged, primarily in the death-overs bowling which has too often hurt Royal Challengers Bangalore. RCB cannot afford to lose seven games in a row, like they did in 2019, with the talent they possess. As with past seasons, the scrutiny is on Kohli the captain, not Kohli the batsman.

Likely XI: 1 Aaron Finch, 2 Parthiv Patel (wk), 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 AB de Villiers, 5 Moeen Ali, 6 Shivam Dube, 7 Chris Morris, 8 Washington Sundar, 9 Navdeep Saini, 10 Umesh Yadav, 11 Yuzvendra Chahal

IPL 2019 result: Sixth place

IPL 2020 squad:

kxip ipl team 2020

Withdrawn players: Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh

Replacements: None

A cursory glance at KXIP’s squad for IPL 2020 in the UAE suggests that this year, KXIP may be lacking in bowling once again, and with Chris Gayle a waning force, they will need to find power at the top.

That is not to say there is a dearth of talent. In KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Nicholas Pooran, Glenn Maxwell, Jimmy Neesham, Karun Nair, Deepak Hooda and Sarfaraz Khan, KXIP have some very fine batsmen capable of devastation. So much depends on how Rahul marshals his players.

Likely XI: 1 Mayank Agarwal, 2 KL Rahul (capt/wk), 3 Nicholas Pooran, 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 Mandeep Singh, 6 Sarfaraz Khan, 7 K Gowtham, 8 Mujeeb Ur Rahman, 9 Mohammed Shami, 10 Sheldon Cottrell, 11 Ishan Porel
