Kolkata Knight Riders( KKR) is currently placed in the middle of the points table with 4 wins and 4 losses having played 8 games. But in all these games KKR’s swashbuckling West Indian all rounder Andre Russell has been more or less absent in them. Comparing his current season with the previous ones, it has been a dull IPL until now. Even though he has been trying quite hard to repeat his previous performances, in this season, it is yet to be seen.
Russell has hit a meagre 83 runs with a highest score of 24 runs and taken 6 wickets this season for his team. Critics have started to point the gun at him for his below par performances with some even asking for him to be dropped from the team all together. I feel dropping him isn’t right for the team’s balance. Yes, he has not scored according to his capability but he has taken wickets at key points in games when the other bowlers failed to do so. Since he has single-handedly helped the team win matches in the past, he should be given more time to get back to his own self. This will help in getting rid of the extra pressure on his shoulders which could enable him to play according to his own standards.
The hard hitting all rounder just needs one big game to show his ability once again and start helping the team to win and improve KKR’s chances of qualifying for the top 4. In the meanwhile, other players should also start taking responsibility. Players like Nitish Rana, Shubman Gill have stood up but not consistently which has been a problem for the team.
Hoping to see him at his best for KKR’s next match against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
