Ever since the news was announced by Sergio Perez himself that he won’t be racing for Racing Point for the 2021 season, fans have been left clueless about his next move. Furthermore Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel will be taking up his place at Racing Point which is being rebranded to Aston Martin from 2021 season.
A driver of the caliber of Perez should definitely stay in Formula 1 for next season. He has been the most consistent driver for his team for so many seasons. Racing Point, earlier known as Sahara Force India, when it was under the leadership of Vijay Mallya and Michiel Mol has earned podium a total of 6 times, 5 of which have been due to Mexico’s Perez.
Perez joined in 2014 and has been the main driver for the team which has grown tremendously and gone up the ladder in the Constructors championship from 6th/7th to 4th. The fact that before the arrival of Perez, Force India had earned only one podium since its inception in 2008 until 2014 has already earned Perez a lot of plaudits from the F1 community. Out of the 131 races that he has raced for them, he has finished in the points in 60 of those races with five, 3rd-place finishes. He has worked hard and delivered on his individual performances even though on a limited budget when compared to the bigger teams such as Mercedes, Ferrari or Red Bull.
He has contributed more to the performance of the team than any of his teammates in all bar the 2014 season, his first at Force India. Even though he is a better driver than his current teammate, Lance Stroll, he is without a place for next season. The Mexican is currently tight-lipped about the negotiations that he is supposedly having with Red Bull for his future in Formula 1 racing. But he himself knows that time is ticking away for the 2021 season.
Let’s hope to hear some good news regarding Perez’s next step otherwise fans will miss his aggressive style of driving and also healthy competition in Formula 1.
